În Statele Unite, la toate chioşcurile, în toate librăriile şi în toate aeroporturile se găseşte o cărticică mică de 3x6 inch şi cu 96 de ăagini intitulată The U.S. Constitution and Fascinating Facts About It. Şi cum zborul până în România durează vreo zece ore, am cumpărat-o şi eu că la 3,18$ (cu tot cu taxe) nu aveam ce pierde. Primul lucru notabil ar fi că trebuie schimbat titlul în Fascinating Facts About the Constitution and The Constitution. Chestiile alea fascinante ocupă mai bine de trei sferturi din carte. Constituţia, săraca, n-are decât 14 pagini. 24 dacă punem la socoteală şi amendamentele.

Ăsta e cel mai bun lucru la constituţia americanilor: e scurtă şi cuprinzătoare. Varianta originală avea doar 4 pagini A4, din care una cu semnături. În prefaţă e descrisă ca fiind "unul dintre cele mai remarcabile documente de natură juridică de vreodată" şi "cel mai important document juridic din lume". Prefaţa ne mai spune şi că e cel mai vechi document de acest tip care a rămas neschimbat de la crearea sa până în zilele noastre (amendamentele nu sunt considerate parte a constituţiei, ci sunt luate separat). Şi că e cea mai scurtă deja am zis.

Aş mai adăuga că e şi cel mai AGRAMAT document de acest fel din lume. Dacă e să ne luăm după hârtia care a dus la crearea celei mai puternice naţiuni din lume, Părinţii Fondatori erau nişte analfabeţi. Hai s-o luăm cu începutul.

*Engleza de la 1787 era în mare cam aceeaşi cu cea din ziua de azi şi respecta aceleaşi reguli.

We, the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

• O grămadă de cuvinte sunt scrise cu literă mare fără vreun motiv aparent. Asta se întâmplă în toate cele zece pagni. E vorba doar de substantive. Asta nu e o greşeală;
• O uniune perfectă e deja în cel mai bun stadiu posibil, n-ai cum s-o faci MAI PERFECTĂ;
  
• OF the United States of America. Aţi făcut o constiuţie A Statelor unite, nu PENTRU Statele Unite.

Representatives and direct Taxes shall be apportioned among the several States which may be included within this Union, according to their respective Numbers, which shall be determined by adding to the whole Number of free Persons, including those bound to Service for a Term of Years, and excluding Indians not taxed, three fifths of all other Persons. [...] The Number of Representatives shall not exceed one for every thirty Thousand, but each State shall have at Least one Representative; and until such enumeration shall be made, the State of New Hampshire shall be entitled to chuse three, Massachusetts eight, Rhode-Island and Providence Plantations one [...]

• About 50 States are included IN this Union nowadays, not within it;
• At Least în cazul de faţă nu e substantiv, deci nu-i nevoie de majusculă;
• The State of New Hampshire shall be entitled to CHOOSE, not chuse its representatives.
  

The Vice President of the United States shall be President of the Senate, but shall have no Vote, unless they be equally divided.

• Vicepreşedintele, nu "vice preşedintele" e şeful senatului;
• And unless you be in Scotland ye should be sayin' that unless they ARE equally divided the president of the senate shall have no vote.
  

When vacancies happen in the Representation from any State, the Executive Authority thereof shall issue Writs of Election to fill such Vacancies.

No State shall enter into any Treaty, Alliance or Confederation; grant Letters of Marque and Reprisal; coin Money; emit Bills of Credit; make any Thing but Gold and Silver Coin a Tender in Payment of Debts; pass any Bill of Attender, ex post facto Law, or Law impairing the Obligation of Contracts, or grant any Title of Nobility.

• Letters of MARK, not marque;
• No state shall make ANYTHING but gold and silver coins;
• And no state shall EXPOST facto law.
